How to Write an epic story
When unsure as to how to write an epic story, there is help available. However, wading through the sheer amount of nonsensical advice and useless computer programs out there can cause any writer to simply give up on their dream.
Ten years ago, I created a bucket list. Consisting of accomplishments like climbing a mountain and bowling a perfect game, I decided time was starting to run out. Finally deciding to accomplish my dream of writing an epic story, I started to do some research. Already having a good grasp of what is considered an epic story, I searched online for writing advice.
Evidently the first step in writing an epic story is making an outline of the plot. Ensuring that I would be distraction- free, I reclined on my couch and starting sketching away. With some ideas that I considered quite impressive, I returned to the online advice website to see what to do next. Reading further about epic story outlines, I was informed that most are extremely long, even as long as some people’s novels. Mine was 3 pages.
Tossing the outline in the trash, I found a website written by a famous epic story author. “Great!” I thought. “This guy has to have some decent advice.” Reading about his writing method, he described a bizarre process of auditioning characters in his head. By changing their clothes and having them audition for a specific scene, he chose which characters were best for the novel. Clearly this person was not in their right mind.
During my continued search for information I ran across some software programs that claimed to help in the writing process and allow almost anyone to put their thoughts in order. Briefly considering this possibility, I concluded that a software program could never help with the advanced creative process, and wrote them all off.
Determined to persevere, I simply decided that I would just start writing. With all of the ideas floating around in my head, it could not be that difficult to get them down on paper in an interesting, readable format. However, though my ideas were decent, they were so disorganized that I started getting them mixed up.
Re-reading my first chapter, I was ready to give up on my dream of writing an epic novel. It was absolutely awful. The characters were not well formed, the setting was inconsistent, and the plot line was confusing. Frustrated beyond belief, I informed my wife that I was going to move on to the next dream on my bucket list and forget about it.
The next day, my wife approached me with some information about a computer program that claimed to help with writing stories, even epic novels. Informing her that I had already looked into computer programs, I went back to bed to wallow in my self-pity. Unbeknownst to me, my wife was ordering one of the software programs as I slept.
Leaving the bedroom after I woke up, my wife grabbed my hand and pulled me into the office. Sitting me down at the computer desk, she said “Here’s the computer program. Now write your stinking epic novel and quit your pouting!” Crossing her arms and glaring at me, I knew I had no choice.
Reluctantly, I got to work. In less than eight months, I finished my first epic novel. Surprisingly, I must say that this program works!
